Following the final cuts on Friday to decrease the Cleveland Browns roster size from 75 to 53, it should be noted that the Browns roster has 15 rookies on it, and the veteran quarterback, Seneca Wallace, was released. The Browns, who have struggled to field a competitive team for years has finally decided to try and develop some home grown talent, in one of the most extreme ways. With rookies taking up 28.3% of the Browns roster, expect to see a lot of mistakes this year, but hopefully the young team can learn and develop as a unit and become a relevant team once again. The most notable of the 15 rookies are the two first round draft picks: RB Trent Richardson, and QB Brandon Weeden.
The complete list of rookies on the Browns 53 man roster is as follows: DB, Johnson Bademosi, WR Travis Benjamin, LB Tank Carder, LB L.J. Ford, DB Tashaun Gibson, WR Josh Gordon, DT John Hughes, LB James-Michael Johnson, DL Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, OL Ryan Miller, RB Trent Richardson, OL Mitchell Schwartz, DB Trevin Wade, QB Brandon Weeden, and DL Billy Winn.
It had been a topic of discussion for most of the preseason after it was announced that Brandon Weeden was going to be the Browns starting quarterback, and that was who will be the backup quarterback. With the announcement that quarterback Seneca Wallace was released by the Browns on Friday, and the Browns decision to keep Thaddeus Lewis as their third quarterback, it is apparent that the team is still holding out hope for the former third round pick from Texas, Colt McCoy. McCoy didn’t show that much progression from his first to his second year, and with the decision to start Weeden, it does still remain unclear what the Browns will do with McCoy, but the fact remains that they trust him to be the primary backup in the event that Weeden goes down or needs to be pulled from the game for whatever reason.
The complete list of cut players by the Cleveland Browns is: OL Dominic Alford, OL Branndon Braxton, QB Jarrett Brown, DL Andre Carroll, WR L.J. Castile, FB Tyler Clutts, LB Archie Donald, OL Calton Ford, DB Coye Francies, TE Evan Frosch, DB Carl Gettis, LB Eric Gordon, DL Travis Ivey, WR Chris Matthews, LB Steve Octavien, RB Quinn Porter, DL Ko Quaye, DB Ramzee Robinson, DL Brian Sanford, OL Jarrod Shaw, LB Brian Smith, DB DeAngelo Smith, LB Sidney Tarver, OL Phil Trautwein, and WR Rod Windsor
